Baking The Cupcakes

Let’s start with a little secret - no need to bake from scratch! We used the Culpitt Select Vanilla Cake Mix, which might just be one of the best cake mixes out there. It’s foolproof, delicious, and all you need to do is add water, mix, and bake. A kilo pack makes about 24 cupcakes, but for this project, we used half the pack for 12 cupcakes, keeping the rest for another baking adventure.

Adding Colour to the Sponge

Adding Colour to the Sponge

For extra fun, we used the Culpitt Select Food Colours - to create bright, colourful sponges. You can stick to one colour or divide the batter into bowls to go multi-coloured.

Add the food colouring gradually, pouring a little into a teaspoon then mixing until you achieve the desired vibrancy.

Baking The Cupcakes, Filled Cupcake Cases

Baking The Cupcakes

Place your Culpitt Select Cupcake Cases in a cupcake tray, fill just over halfway with batter, and bake for around 20 minutes until risen and firm.

Chocolate Centres In Cupcakes

A Chocolate Surprise

For an extra treat, you could add a chocolate truffle centre! Spoon a little batter into each cupcake case, pop a chocolate truffle in the middle, then cover with more batter before baking.
Once baked, allow them to cool completely.

Colouring The Icing With Culpitt Select

Colouring the Frosting

We made a simple buttercream frosting colouring it with the Culpitt Select Food Colours, just like the cake batter.
These food colours are vibrant, affordable, and easy to work with, there’s no need for expensive paste colours.

Piping Bags and Coloured Cupcakes

Filling the Piping Bags

Using Culpitt Select Disposable Piping Bags, we snipped the ends and inserted different piping tubes to create the monster fur textures.
A handy tip is to place the piping bag in a tall glass while filling it with frosting to make the process easier.

Piping The Monster Fur

Yellow Monsters

Yellow Monster

Use the Wilton Open Star Tube 8B to pipe fur. Hold the bag directly above the cupcake, apply pressure, and move up and down five times finishing with a spiked effect.

Blue Piping Monsters

Blue Monster

Use a smaller open star tube like the Wilton Open Star Tube 4B to pipe stars but continue applying pressure upwards to create thick fur strands in different directions.

Red monsters

The Jem Small Grass Tube is perfect for creating the look of short, messy fur. Apply pressure while pulling upwards for a textured effect.

Pink Monster Fur

Use the Wilton Open Star Tube 1M to pipe a large star in the middle then add stars around the edge. Finish by piping two more stars in the centre for the eyeballs.

Green Monster Fur

Using the Jem Round Nozzle, start piping from the outside of the cupcake and spiral inwards finishing in the centre of the cupcake.

Orange Monster Fur Piping

Using the Jem Small Grass Nozzle keep applying pressure while wiggling your way around the cupcake to cover the surface.

Final Touches

Making Googly Eyes

Making Googley Monster Eyes

Now for the fun part creating the googly eyes! We used chocolate buttons, long chocolate biscuit sticks, marshmallows, and the Edible Sugar Eyes.

To stick them together, melt some chocolate buttons, then use a biscuit stick to “paint” the chocolate onto the decorations to stick them together.

Let them set in the fridge for about 30 minutes (or make them the night before).

Final Decorating Touches

Finished Monster Cake

Give your monster cupcakes some personality by attaching the googly eyes and pointing them in different directions to add a playful touch!

Lastly, don’t forget to give your yellow monster a chocolate chip cookie for that extra charm.
